Bright Eyes plans concert to fight immigration law

(AP) – 5 hours ago

OMAHA, Neb. — Bright Eyes, Cursive and other Nebraska music acts will perform at a concert to raise money to fight a law that would ban the hiring of or renting to illegal immigrants in the Nebraska city of Fremont.

The Concert for Equality on Saturday in Omaha’s Benson neighborhood will include two simultaneous shows — one outside and the other indoors at the Waiting Room.

Tickets cost $20 to $50, and proceeds from the sold-out concert go to the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska, one of two civil rights groups who have sued the city of Fremont. The groups says the voter-approved ordinance is discriminatory.

The Fremont City Council voted Tuesday to suspend the ban until the lawsuits are settled. It was to take effect on Thursday.

OMAHA, Neb. – Faced with expensive legal challenges, officials in the eastern Nebraska town of Fremont are considering suspending a voter-approved ban on hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants until the lawsuits are resolved.

The City Council narrowly rejected the ban in 2008, prompting supporters to gather enough signatures for the ballot measure. The ordinance, which was approved by voters last month, has divided the community. Supporters say it was necessary to make up for what they see as lax federal law enforcement and opponents argue that it could fuel discrimination.

But the council’s president, Scott Getzschman, insisted the elected body was concerned about money, not about any lack of support for the ordinance. The City Council is scheduled to vote on suspending the ban on Tuesday night, a day before the city goes to court over the measure.

The city faces lawsuits from the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund. City officials have estimated that Fremont’s costs of implementing the ordinance — including legal fees, employee overtime and improved computer software — would average $1 million a year.

So, you put all of your eggs in one basket, and then realized at the last minute that you forgot your wallet at home?  Is that what is going on here?  That’s what it seems like to me Fremont, Nebraska.

How dare you think that taking away priveleges from ‘Illegal Immigrants,’ is going to make anything better for you.  Already, you have lawsuits against the city and state, and you’re probably realizing that your housing market was going down… oh yeah, you were trying to make your economy better by limiting certain peoples rights and freedoms.  Little did you know that it would have the adverse effect.

I am so sorry to the people who have contributed to the local economy of Fremont, Nebraska, and who most likely now feel that none of it was worth it, besides that one shot at the American Dream.  Well, there is one downside to wanting the American Dream… its that if the people who were ‘born’ here can’t have it.. neither can you.  I’m sorry, that’s just the way it is to them.  Get a life, horrible Fremont, Nebraska!  And quit trying to ruin everyone elses.
